Embracing the Life of An Innisfil Startup – Josh Matlow
Lakeside living AND working sounds good, right?
The entrepreneurial life isn’t for the faint of heart: you have to work harder, longer and with more passion than at any other time in your life. But in the right place, with the right support, it’s such a worthwhile effort!
Have you ever been on vacation at a cottage and at some point wondered if you could move to wherever you were? It’s hard to imagine going home to the everyday of life when you’re immersed and enjoying a lakeside experience.
The beauty of places like Innisfil is that it IS possible to have your cake and eat it too! You can build and run your business and have the cottage lifestyle, every single day. Add in excellent schools, quality health care and easy access to the GTA, and you’ve got the perfect combination for life and living.
But don’t take our word for it. Here are excerpts from an interview with one local entrepreneur, Josh Matlow.
Who is Josh Matlow?
Josh is the owner and Director of Operations for SeatGIANT.ca. They are the first secondary ticket marketplace to sell tickets for sports, concerts and theatre event in Canadian funds. Josh chose Innisfil seven years ago, to live and work! Here’s more about why:
In his words: We were able to change the ticketing game on June 1st, 2017 to become the first secondary ticket marketplace in the world to sell in Canadian funds! We are growing year over year and a large part of the reason why is our connections that we have established with local companies, events and the local people! Supporting local has helped us grow and thrive!
I chose Innisfil at the time I purchased my first home by luck. I was living in Toronto and at the time, as a single man, I was unable to purchase anything in the GTA for the pricing alone. Innisfil offered GREAT prices on homes, away from the city and close to the water! Having my own business allowed me to live wherever I wanted, making Innisfil a very appealing location.
And Josh’s daily commute? I have the pleasure of working from home. Being around Innisfil, going for lunch in town, stopping by the YMCA for a workout, or even taking some of my meetings to the waterfront, it makes a daily routine less regimented and helps to get out of the house/office!
Favourite Hidden Gems in Innisfil
In addition to the new library, here are a few other gems, according to Josh: the YMCA is one of the best decisions the town has made to bring people together, have them involved and come together as a community! The classes, the kids camps, the FARMERS MARKET! A great way to support local!
Favourite summer activities?
I like going to the beach, but also not too far away in Barrie is the Barrie Baycats baseball team. I used to play baseball and was a part of their team from 2005-2009, when I was living in Toronto. Moving up to Innisfil allowed me to reconnect with my team and this year I even volunteered at home games to help them get online with online tickets and created a collaboration with SeatGIANT, which made a lot of sense.
There is also Innisfest, which includes live music and cover bands by the water as well RibFest that helps bring the entire town together. There is so much to do up in the Simcoe Region in the summer. It’s a matter of getting out, getting involved and embracing the local community!
Favourite winter activities?
I am personally not much of a winter sports fan, but if you are, Innisfil is for you! There are tons of trails and very popular ice fishing in the winter: we see the huts on the water all the time. The YMCA also has multiple ice rinks for hockey or skating leisure as well!
And favourite eateries?
I am a fan of many of them, but my family and I are particular fans of Pasta Plus! This is not only a local restaurant, but owned by local people, who also happen to make the BEST LASAGNA in the world! Nancy and Anthony are so kind and personable, it shows extremely well on Innisfil as they welcome people who return by name and make a point of striking up conversation to add that personal touch! Did I mention how good their lasagna is?
The Most Exciting and Relaxing Things Josh Has Experienced
The most exciting thing I have done in Innisfil is actually moving here, just over 7 years ago. This move to date was the best decision of my life as it also allowed me to meet my wife Sasha! We actually went to high school together, and were able to reconnect many years later, since we were both living up in the Simcoe region. We now have moved into our marital home and have decided to stay and raise our children in Innisfil!
And the most relaxing?
Go to the beach, set up a chair, an umbrella and do some work on my phone! The beach is so close everyday, it brings joy and relaxation just to be around water!
Josh’s Advice for Entrepreneurs Thinking About Moving Their Families and Businesses
Do it! This is not only a great place to live, but a great community to be a part of. There are networking groups you can be a part of to help build your brand. The town is now working on bringing an accelerator into the mix to help grow brands locally. I would highly suggest it.
A Few Final Words
We asked Josh if he could go back to living in a big city, after living and working in Innisfil. Here’s what he said: Never! The small town, nice people and local community we have now become apart of will never be the same in the big city! There are too many people in the big city, you can get lost amongst the crowd. Living in Innisfil allowed myself, my wife and now my family to grow and live a good quality of life away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
That says it all, doesn’t it? Between the ideaLAB at the library, the Innisfil Economic Development Team and countless other groups and organizations, there is room to build, grow and thrive in this lakeside community. It’s truly the place to live your best life.
